Chiefly correspondence with overseer William Willingham re operation of her plantation on Pinckney Island, Beaufort County, S.C., including business accounts, list of clothing issued to African-American slaves, cost of medical care and management abilities of various plantation drivers. Including genealogical information, c.1859, re Pinckney family including source note signed by Herbert Ravenel Sass, 1947; letter, 12 May 1860, from J.W. Miller, to Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Jr., re donation made to the Santee Church.

Charleston, S.C. newspaperman, writer, and historian. He was the son of George Herbert Sass (1845-1908), also a writer, and Anna Ravenel Sass. Sass served on the editorial staff of the News & Courier, a Charleston newspaper, and later gave up newspaper work to write stories, articles, novels, and other works, most of which concern the natural history and history of South Carolina.
